Overview

Thomas A. Mattioli is an of counsel in Nutter’s Intellectual Property Department. A former engineer with 20 years of experience practicing IP law, Thomas advises clients in the electrical, wireless, mechanical, electronics, software, semiconductor, AI, and medical device industries on how to leverage and protect their IP assets.

Thomas represents clients in a broad array of IP matters, including patent prosecution and litigation, trademark prosecution and litigation, and counsel on patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret intellectual property matters. He has extensive experience in the preparation and prosecution of U.S., international (PCT), and foreign patent applications, including the European Union, China, Japan, Korea, and more. Thomas has represented clients in federal district court and before the Patent Trial and Appeals Board in patent and trademark litigation. Additionally, Thomas prepares patentability, freedom to operate, and infringement opinions; confidentiality and non-disclosure agreements; and intellectual property license agreements and inventor assignments.

Prior to joining Nutter, Thomas was a patent practitioner at boutique intellectual property law firms. Earlier in his career, Thomas was an engineer at General Electric, Burns Engineering, and Henkels and McCoy. He designed and oversaw electrical projects for major U.S. airports, including runway and taxiway lighting systems, precision runway monitoring systems, and airport terminal electrical and control systems. Thomas also designed and provided technical support for electromechanical, electronic, and digital protective relay systems.

Active in the community, Thomas coaches youth hockey and youth baseball. He is a member of the Justinian Society.
