Seth Berman, a partner and leader of Nutter’s Privacy and Data Security practice group, will discuss what universities should know about cybersecurity at the Boston Bar Association. Seth’s program, “Universities and Data Breaches - Navigating the Clash Between Security and Academic Freedom,” will explore how universities are regular targets of hackers seeking personal data or intellectual property, thereby requiring heightened security, monitoring, and, in some instances, interactions with law enforcement. Universities are also beacons of freedom, encouraging their students, faculty, and the community at large to experiment with new concepts and exchange ideas. This creates unique problems for universities dealing with hacking incidents – especially when law enforcement is involved. This lunch will examine these issues, and explore how universities balance these competing demands.
