Nutter announced today that it has achieved Mansfield 5.0 Certification after completing the rigorous year-long certification program, which is aimed at promoting, supporting, and sustaining diversity in law firm leadership. This is the third consecutive year that Nutter has achieved Mansfield Certification.

“We’re proud of Nutter’s Mansfield Certification, as it signifies Nutter’s ongoing commitment to be a law firm in which attorneys from historically underrepresented groups can succeed and thrive,” said Michael Scott, Co-Managing Partner of Nutter.

A Mansfield 5.0 Certification requires law firms to consider at least 30 percent women lawyers, attorneys of color, LGBTQ+ lawyers, and lawyers with disabilities when the Firm fills leadership and governance roles, promotes lawyers to equity partnership, hires lawyers in senior lateral positions, and when the Firm designates teams for client business generation presentations. New for Mansfield 5.0 Certification this year, Nutter also considered 30 percent historically underrepresented individuals when hiring and promoting senior-level professional staff roles. To achieve Mansfield 5.0 Certification, Nutter collaborated with Diversity Lab over a 12-month certification period with built-in measurement, transparency, and accountability mechanisms.

Nutter’s equity diversity efforts are led by its Co-Managing Partners, Liam O’Connell and Michael Scott, its Executive Committee, and the Firm’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, which is co-chaired by Partners Ian Roffman and Johanna Wise Sullivan, and comprised of members of the Firm’s Executive, Legal Personnel, and Hiring Committees. The EDI Committee establishes firm-wide strategy related to equity, diversity, and inclusion and directs the work of subcommittees that design and implement initiatives that promote an inclusive Firm culture. Members of these subcommittees include partners, associates, and staff. Nutter has successfully participated in the year-long Mansfield Rule certification process each year since 2019, and the Firm is currently committed to the Mansfield Rule 6.0 certification process for 2022-2023.

The Mansfield Rule originated in the 2016 Women in Law Hackathon, which was hosted by Diversity Lab in collaboration with Bloomberg Law and Stanford Law School. Named in honor of Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to the practice of law in the United States, the initiative aims to increase diversity in leadership ranks within the legal profession.
