Overview

Daniel P. Mulhern co-chairs Nutter’s Public Policy Group. He draws on over 20 years of government service and litigation experience to enhance outcomes for clients in government investigations, internal investigations, dispute resolution, crisis management, and strategic decisions. Dan focuses his practice on advising public and privately-held companies on government relations, constituency building, and strategic planning. His adept navigation of legislative and regulatory landscapes and astute guidance on public-private partnerships bolster corporate responsibility priorities for his clients.

Dan currently serves on the Judicial Nominating Commission. He was also a member of the transition team for Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey. Additionally, Dan chaired the 2024 Children's Advocacy Center's annual Step Up & Speak Out event which raises funds and awareness for children impacted by abuse and exploitation. Dan has been recognized locally and nationally for his work leading interdisciplinary, collaborative, and public-health-focused approaches to public safety and criminal justice reform, including awards from the United States Attorney General and the University of Massachusetts Boston Robert H. Quinn Award for Outstanding Community Leadership in the Greater Boston area.

Prior to joining Nutter, Dan served as the Suffolk County First Assistant District Attorney. In this capacity, he oversaw SCDAO’s trial teams and their handling of over 25,000 cases in courts across Suffolk County and lead the District Attorney’s efforts to address the impact of COVID-19 on the criminal justice system and Trial Court with an interdisciplinary team. Dan also spearheaded the District Attorney’s efforts to establish best practices in fatal and non-fatal use of force investigations and allocation of internal and external resources to impact public safety outcomes and has extensive experience in crisis management and communication. Before that, Dan was a Senior Advisor and Director of the City of Boston’s Office of Public Safety to then Mayor Martin J. Walsh. In this role, he worked to establish cross-agency and cabinet coordination to tackle the challenging and complex problems that lead to and perpetuate violence. Dan also served as the Chief of the Gang Unit and Neighborhoods Initiative at SCDAO, a prosecutor in the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, and a Special Assistant United States Attorney. Dan has extensive trial experience and has led/co-led complex state and federal investigations in gang interdiction, narcotics and firearm trafficking, and asset forfeiture.

Throughout his career, Dan has demonstrated a commitment to tackling complex issues contributing to violence, fostering cross-agency coordination, and leading groundbreaking initiatives in gang interdiction, narcotics and firearm trafficking, and asset forfeiture. With a wealth of trial experience and a track record of successfully managing complex state and federal investigations, Dan remains at the forefront of shaping policies and strategies that drive positive outcomes for his clients and communities alike.
